It is almost that time of year when ghosts, goblins and ghouls roam the streets! As excitement builds for a night of costumes, candy and chills, the City of Paramount encourages residents, visitors and the community to make safety part of their Halloween plans. With a few precautions, everyone can enjoy a night that is all treats and no tricks.
Whether you’re making your own costume or picking one up from Cassandra Party Land (15301 Paramount Blvd.), visibility is key. Costumes that incorporate reflective materials help trick-or-treaters stand out in the dark. You can also add reflective tape or glow sticks. Masks may limit vision, so consider using face paint or makeup as an alternative to bring your costume to life.
Trick-or-treating transforms our neighborhood into big candy-fueled adventures. For those on the hunt for their favorite goodies, remember to do so with care. Children should visit familiar neighborhoods, stay on well-lit streets and always walk on sidewalks rather than the road. Everyone, including zombies and witches, should “stop, look and listen” before crossing the street to the next house or neighborhood. A trusted adult should accompany younger children, while older children are safest when in groups and carrying a flashlight.
Drivers also have a vital role to play in keeping Paramount’s little monsters safe. With increased foot traffic and dark lighting, it is important to slow down, stay alert and put away distractions like cell phones. When at home, keep walkways clear from decorations and well-lit. If displaying your creative jack-o’-lantern designs, consider using battery-operated candles to prevent fires.
The City is also hosting various Halloween activities throughout October for those eager to celebrate:
- Halloween Hootenanny on Saturday, October 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. (SOLD OUT)
- Halloween Haunted House on Friday, October 31, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Paramount Park Gym (14400 Paramount Blvd.)
- Halloween Festival on Friday, October 31, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Paramount Park (14400 Paramount Blvd.)
