Organics Recycling

Organic material accounts for more than 33% of California’s waste. To reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by organic waste build cup, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 1383 into law in September 2016. This statewide effort aims to reduce emissions of short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) by meeting the following targets:

  • Reduce organic waste disposal 50% by 2020 and 75% by 2025.
  • Encourage people to eat at least 20% of currently disposed surplus food by 2025.

Now Paramount residents can reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the fight against global warming. Organic-waste pails are being delivered to single-family homes for the new recycling program mandated by State law.

Put your food scraps and other organic waste in the pail then dump it into your green recycling bin for curbside pick-up.

This rollout is focused on single-family homes only, with multi-family properties scheduled soon.

E-Waste Free Pick-Up

Old electronic equipment cannot be thrown away in the trash – it must be recycled, according to State law. These are items such as computers, televisions, microwaves, cellphones, telephones, stereos, typewriters, fax machines, and more.

Free drop-offs of e-waste at Athens Services are available to homes, apartments, and mobile home parks in Paramount. Call (562) 259-1239 for details. The free e-waste home collection is only available for residential accounts, one to three units. To schedule a pick-up, call Athens Services at (562) 259-1239 at least one day before your normal trash day, then place the e-waste at your curbside on trash day.

Certified Collection Centers

If you change your own motor oil you cannot just throw it away. It needs to be recycled along with the filters. Here are the Certified Collection Centers in Paramount: O’Reilly Auto Parts, 15725 Downey Ave., (562) 272-1433; Auto Zone, 16249 Paramount Blvd., (562) 295-5120.

Assembly Bill No. 341

If a business generates 4 cubic yards of more of commercial solid waste per week, State law requires to arrange for recycling services. Please contact Athens Services for information.

Mandatory Commercial Organics Recycling

If a commercial account produces 4 or more cubic yards of waste, California law now requires the account holder to enroll in organic waste recycling. Please contact Athens Services to enroll in the program.

Have Large Items Hauled Away

It’s illegal to dump anything in the alleys, streets, sidewalks, or public rights-of-way in Paramount. Owners of property adjacent to where such dumping occurs can be fined.

But there’s an easy way to dispose of large items that won’t fit in a regular trash container. call Athens Services at (562) 259-1239, on the day before your normal trash pick-up. Then place the items on the curb with your trash.

Keep in mind that things like lumber, concrete, auto parts, and toxins such as paint and used motor oil cannot be removed in this way.

The service is free for single-family residences and multi-family properties with trash barrels, not bins. For residential properties with trash bins and for commercial accounts there is a separate item charge.
