Sharpen Your Pencils and Your School Safety Smarts

Students are back in the classroom, and that means it is the perfect time to brush up on essential school safety tips. The City of Paramount encourages parents, guardians and students to take a few extra steps to ensure the journey to school is safe, whether on foot, by bike, on the bus or in a car.

The following are some simple ways everyone can help make the 2025-26 school year a safe one:

  • Plan ahead: Review your child’s route to and from school and choose a path that is well-traveled and well-lit.
  • Buddy up: Encourage walking and biking with neighbors or siblings when possible.
  • Stay visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing during early morning trips to school, as it can help drivers see pedestrians and cyclists more easily.
  • Limit distractions: Avoid using phones and headphones when crossing the streets or walking near traffic.
  • Drive cautiously: Slow down in school zones, pay attention to crossing children and follow all traffic signals, signs and directives from crossing guards.
  • Stay alert: Report unsafe conditions near schools to the Paramount Public Safety Department by calling (562) 220-2002.

To support student safety, the City of Paramount and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department recently hosted a Student Safe-Walking class on August 6. The class provided students valuable safety tips to start the year off right and safe, beginning with their daily commute.

By actively practicing these habits, students and families all play a role in keeping Paramount’s schools and streets safe. Together, the City can make sure pencils and safety awareness are the only things sharp this school year.
