With the school year quickly approaching in Paramount, it is time to gear up for a safe and smooth transition back to the classroom. According to the American Automobile Association, traffic accidents involving school-age children increase by up to 30% during the back-to-school season. The Public Safety team is ready to help protect Paramount by enforcing back-to-school traffic safety measures and working with the Paramount Unified School District to implement prevention plans that promote smart moves for a safe school year.
Starting the week of August 12, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be on high alert with enhanced traffic enforcement. Violations such as stopping at red curbs, obstructing roadways and not yielding to crossing guards will result in fines ranging from $53 to $238.
To further support student safety, the City is hosting a Free Student Safe-Walking Class on August 10 to provide students with valuable walking safety tips and practical advice. LASD Deputies will conduct two sessions at the Sheriff’s Station (15001 Paramount Blvd): the first from 9 to 10 a.m., and the second from 10 to 11 a.m. For more information or to register, please call (562) 220-2002.
Please remember to adhere to the following practices while traveling:
-
Follow all traffic signals and signs.
-
Reduce speed in school zones and be prepared to stop for pedestrians and school buses.
-
Always cross streets at designated crosswalks.
-
Look both ways before crossing and establish eye contact with drivers.
-
Keep electronic devices hidden and avoid using them when in areas with high pedestrian traffic.
By actively enforcing regulations and raising awareness, Paramount aims for a safe and successful start to the school year for all. For more information about the back-to-school safety campaign, follow the Public Safety department on social media.
