Emergency Preparedness

The Public Safety Department cares about your well-being and wants to make sure that you stay prepared in the event of an emergency.

Make a Plan

Your loved ones may not be together when a disaster strikes, so it is important to develop a Family Communication Plan so that you know how you will contact one another and reconnect if separated during an emergency.

  • Establish a local family meeting place that is familiar to everyone and easy to find. Make sure that your loved ones know to report here if they are unable to locate the rest of the family following a disaster.
  • Establish an out-of-area contact that everyone can check in with to relay status updates. You may not have consistent coverage or utility service following a disaster and having someone outside the affected area who can collect and share information is invaluable.

Build A Kit

Assemble an emergency kit by storing disaster supplies in an easily accessible place in your home.

A basic emergency supply kit should include the following items:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days)
  • Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food)
  • First aid kit
  • Personal hygiene/sanitation items
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio
  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • Wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)
  • Manual can opener (for food)
  • Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery
