May is Building Safety Month, a nationwide campaign highlighting the importance of modern building codes and safety practices in protecting our homes, businesses and neighborhoods. In Paramount, building safety isn’t just a priority in May, it’s a year-round commitment led by the City’s dedicated Building and Safety Division.
From issuing permits and reviewing plans to inspecting worksites and enforcing building codes, the division oversees the full cycle of construction projects. Their mission remains simple: safeguard the community from potential hazards such as fires, structural failures and earthquake-related damage. As Paramount continues to grow and welcome new development, maintaining high building safety standards is key to preserving the City’s quality of life. By promoting safe construction practices and ensuring compliance with local, state and federal regulations, the division helps create a safer, more resilient and attractive community.
One emerging trend supported by the City is the safe conversion of garages into Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). With housing in high demand across the region, more residents are exploring legal ways to expand their living space. Through careful permitting and inspections, these conversions are completed properly, reducing risks like faulty electrical wiring or structural instability.
The Building and Safety team collaborates closely with other City departments and regional agencies, including Public Safety, Public Works and the South Coast Air Quality Management District. This teamwork ensures that every stage of a construction project, from demolition to final inspection, meets rigorous safety and environmental standards. For example, demolition work involving asbestos must follow strict protocols to prevent air pollution and protect landfill integrity.
To make building services even more accessible and convenient, the City has launched a new online permit portal. Residents and contractors can now apply for permits, upload plans, pay fees and track project status, anytime, from anywhere. The portal is also integrated with SolarApp+, allowing most residential solar permits to be approved instantly.
The City of Paramount remains committed to building a community that’s not only beautiful, but built to last. To learn more about permits, building codes or to connect with the Building and Safety Division, visit www.paramountcity.gov or call (562) 220-2036.
