Celebrating National Parks and Rec Month

In the City of Paramount, National Parks and Recreation Month isn’t limited to 31 days; it’s a year-round commitment to building outdoor spaces where the community can play and grow together. With six local parks, Paramount Park (14400 Paramount Blvd.) stands out as the heart of that commitment — a historic and beloved gathering place that has connected generations.

The park’s story began in June 1947, when Los Angeles County allocated $50,000 for its creation. Even before the City was incorporated in 1957, the community already referred to the area as “Paramount Park.” In 1958, the park officially became City property and, since then, it has evolved alongside the people it serves. Recent upgrades, including a brand-new playground, enhanced gym and pool facilities and refreshed picnic amenities, reflect the City’s dedication to creating safe and welcoming outdoor environments.

Today, Paramount Park welcomes more than 170,000 visitors annually. It’s much more than an open space; it’s a cornerstone of community life, home to youth sports leagues, senior activities, citywide events like the Dia del Niño celebration and so much more. Whether it’s a child learning how to play soccer or a family gathering for the Back to School giveaway, Paramount Park is where community happens all year long.

True to this year’s National Parks and Recreation Month theme, “Build Together, Play Together,” Paramount Park is the picture of decades of collaboration and progress. The City’s partnership with the Paramount Unified School District has expanded access to recreation for both students and residents. What started as the City using school baseball fields for youth sports has grown into a partnership where both the City and the school district share facilities. Now schools also use nearby park fields for recess and physical education and the high school swim and water polo teams train in the City’s pool.

As the City celebrates this observance, it invites residents to not only enjoy its parks but also recognize the role they play in building a stronger and healthier community.
