In California, winter and spring seasons sometimes bring heavy rain, strong winds, and chilly temperatures that can lead to flooding, power outages, and hazardous road conditions. The City of Paramount encourages all residents to take simple steps now to stay safe and be prepared for the unexpected.
Start by reviewing or creating an emergency plan. Make sure you have an emergency kit that includes essentials like blankets, warm clothing, flashlights, and extra batteries. Check your home for potential hazards, such as clogged gutters or weak tree branches that could fall in high winds or heavy rains. If you rely on electricity for medical devices, have backup power in place in case of an outage.
Driving safety is also critical during winter storms. Wet roads can be slippery and reduced visibility increases accident risks. Make sure your tires are in good condition, your headlights are clear and your vehicle is stocked with emergency supplies. Always allow extra time when traveling in rainy or foggy conditions.
To help the community stay prepared year-round, the City is hosting the Paramount Ready Disaster Preparedness Expo on Saturday, March 29 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Progress Park. This free event offers expert insights, hands-on activities, and valuable resources to help residents strengthen their emergency readiness.
The Public Safety Department also provides helpful resources including:
- Emergency alerts through Nixle
- The County of Los Angeles’ Emergency Survival Guide for comprehensive disaster preparedness information
- Disaster shelters, emotional recovery and support in partnership with the American Red Cross, Greater Long Beach chapter
- Citizen Corps, which organizes disaster preparedness education, citizen training and volunteer program
By taking proactive steps today, you can help protect yourself, loved ones and the community. For more emergency preparedness tips, visit: paramountcity.gov/government/departments/public-safety/emergency-preparedness/ and ready.gov.
