A “Super El Niño” isn’t a massive storm. It’s a climate pattern in the Pacific Ocean that can increase the chance of wetter weather in Southern California.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during fall and winter 2026–27. While this does not guarantee heavy rainfall in Paramount, it makes preparing for possible storms especially important.
How Could El Niño Affect Paramount?
Heavy rain can lead to:
- Flooded streets and overwhelmed storm drains
- Fallen trees from saturated soil and strong winds
- Road hazards and difficult driving conditions
How the City Is Preparing
The City has been coordinating emergency preparedness efforts ahead of the rainy season by working with LA County safety partners and staying informed through workshops, trainings, and briefings through the county.
We’ve also increased the following measures:
- Increased sandbag availability
- Catch basin clearing for storm drains
- Tree trimming
- Emergency preparedness team is on stand-by
How Residents Can Prepare
Before the rain arrives, take a few simple steps:
- Check drainage: Clear leaves and debris from gutters and keep drainage areas around your home clear.
- Secure outdoor items: Bring in or secure furniture and other items that could blow away.
- Build and emergency kit: Keep flashlights, backup batteries, food and drinking water on hand.
- Stay alert: Sign up for City emergency alerts by texting “90723” to 888777.
- Never drive through flooded streets. Water may be deeper or faster-moving than it appears and can hide dangerous road conditions. Turn around and find another route.
If you notice clogged storm drains, flooding or other Public Works concerns, contact the City:
- Regular business hours: (562) 220-2020
- After-hours, non-emergency requests: (562) 220-2002
- Online: Submit a General Service Request
Sandbag Information
Sandbags are made available during designated distribution periods, typically ahead of wet weather. Proof of Paramount residency is required, limit to ten (10) bags per household.
Sandbags are typically available for pickup at the following City facilities when distribution periods are active:
- Paramount Park, 14400 Paramount Blvd.
- Paramount Sheriff’s Station, 15001 Paramount Blvd. (You can fill your own bags with sand, please bring your own shovel).
Street Sweeping
Street sweeping will typically be scheduled normally, unless rain is severe. We will notify the public on social media, Nixle, and our website if this changes.
Prepare Now, Stay Safer Later
A Super El Niño does not mean heavy rain every day, but preparing now can help protect your household when storms arrive. Taking a few precautions while skies are clear can help Paramount residents stay safer and better informed when storms arrive.
