As the weather warms, the days grow longer and the school year begins to wind down, there is no better time to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. What better way to spend a day than by cooling off in the pool?
May is recognized as National Water Safety Month, an annual campaign organized by the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance in partnership with the American Red Cross, National Drowning Prevention Alliance, National Recreation and Park Association and World Waterpark Association. This month serves as an important reminder to prioritize safety in and around water so everyone can enjoy a fun and safe season.
In the City of Paramount, water safety is not just a one-month priority, it is a year-round effort focused on protecting residents and our youngest swimmers. Through ongoing education and a partnership with Premier Aquatics, the City remains dedicated to helping everyone stay informed and confident with and without floaties.
Premier Aquatics offers learn-to-swim programs in Paramount at the Paramount Pool (14400 Paramount Blvd). Certified aquatic instructors teach a curriculum focused on water safety, skill-building and fun that supports confident swimmers and long-term water safety education for the community. The program offers:
- Year-round heated pool
- Proven swim curriculum designed for every age and stage
- Certified instructors trained in CPR, AED and first aid
- Small class sizes
- Flexible schedules
Beyond lessons, Premier Aquatics also offers swimmers ages five and up the opportunity to join a competitive swim team. The program is designed for those just beginning to explore competitive swimming and for swimmers looking to refine their strokes. Participants are placed into the following levels:
- Bronze: Open for swimmers ages five to nine years old. At this level, swimmers begin to learn more advanced strokes such as butterfly and breaststroke.
- Silver: Open to swimmers ages eight and older and will focus on enhancing endurance and refining technique in butterfly and breaststroke.
No matter the level, safety remains a central part of any activity in and out of the water. As you and your swimmers enjoy aquatic activities, keep these essential water safety tips in mind:
- Designate an adult “water watcher” to supervise without distractions
- Ensure backyard pools have proper fencing and self-latching gates
- Never swim alone and use life jackets for inexperienced swimmers
- Consider enrolling in CPR and other health and water safety courses
