Ring, ring, ring! The back-to-school bells are chiming, and Paramount students are packing up their backpacks, sharpening their pencils and getting ready for another exciting school year. As families and students prepare for the first day of school, it is also the perfect time to brush up on the ABCs of school safety.
Whether students walk, bike, ride the bus or travel by car, implementing simple school safety habits can help everyone get to and from school safely. Drivers, parents/guardians and students all play a key role in creating safer streets and school zones.
Keep the 2026-27 school year a safe and productive one by:
- Slowing down in school zones: Watch for reduced speed limits (typically 25 miles per hour), crossing guards and children crossing the street.
- Staying alert: Avoid distractions like using your phone while biking, driving or walking.
- Looking both ways while crossing: Look left, right and left again before crossing at designated crossways, obeying crossing guards and stepping off the curb.
- Buckling up: Everyone in a car must wear a seat belt, and younger children should ride in an appropriate car or booster seat.
- Being bus smart: Wait for the bus in a safe location, stay out of the “danger zone” (10 feet on each side of a stopped school bus) and never cross in front of the bus until the driver signals it’s safe.
- Riding safely: Bicyclists and scooter riders must always wear a properly fitted helmet and follow all traffic laws.
To support student safety, the City of Paramount and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department will host a Student Safe-Walking Class on Wednesday, August 5 at 10 a.m. at the Paramount Sheriff’s Station, 15001 Paramount Blvd. The class provided students with valuable safety tips to start the year off right and safe, beginning with their daily commute.
