Know Your Rights

Understanding your rights is one of the most powerful tools you have, regardless of your immigration status. The City of Paramount encourages all residents to be informed and prepared.

If You Are Approached by Immigration Authorities:

  • You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions about where you were born or how you entered the country.
  • You do not have to open your door. Unless agents have a warrant signed by a judge, you are not required to let them into your home.
  • You have the right to speak to a lawyer. You can ask for legal representation and should not sign anything you don’t understand.
  • You can refuse to sign documents. Do not sign anything without reading it or having a lawyer review it first.

If You Are at Work or in Public:

  • Stay calm. Do not run or resist.
  • Ask if you are free to go. If the officer says yes, calmly walk away.
  • Do not lie. Giving false documents or information can be used against you.

Plan Ahead:

  • Memorize the phone number of a trusted contact or immigration attorney.
  • Carry a Know Your Rights card and keep important documents in a safe place.
  • Talk to your family about what to do in case of an emergency.
  • For more information, visit the ACLU’s Know Your Rights resource or download a Know Your Rights card (PDF).
